Description
Within our catalog, this tooth is one of the best in terms of spectacular preservation of all its features. The Spinosaurus rests in the Cretaceous North African sites are very common, representing a wide percentage of the great carnivorous dinosaurs. However, the preservation of a sharp and well defined tip is a very rare feature.

Most teeth of this species, due to its length and its stylized morphology, tend to lose the cusps during the eating process. After its death, they suffer mechanical wear during the sedimentarian transportation. Finally, during the fossilization, the lithostatic pressure also acts as a destructive agent for this delicate structures.

As mentioned, this piece is exceptional, especially because of its size and preservation state. It does not have any restoration or reparation. This is an absolutely well defined piece all along its length. The quality of the enamel is first class. It has a penetrating orange color that progressively turns into red towards the tip. In some areas, variations of the color yield some beautiful yellowish tones. The longitudinal stretch marks, typical of this species of ichthyophagous dinosaur, are perfectly drawn along this amazing tooth. The abovementioned set of preservation features make this Spinosaurus tooth one of the finest available specimens, making it difficult to find a better one in any of its features.

One of the difficult features to find in dentition samples of Spinosaurus is present in this piece. It is the preservation of the root (the part of the tooth without enamel, which occupied a lower position in the gum). Its preservation is complicated due to the hollow structure, which can collapse easily when even slight pressures are applied.

The teeth with strong and vivid fossilization colors such as red, orange and black come from small paleochannels composed by thin layers, in the intermediate and upper stratigraphic levels (Red Sandstone Beds), from the Aoufous Formation (Kem Kem Basin, South of Morocco). The lithology of this body of sediment is characterized by the dominance of sandstones (also known as arenites) and fluvial gravel, of siliceous nature. Sometimes large concentrations of iron oxide are present, and then a small sample of that is usually present at the base of the tooth. These mineralizations are responsible for the wide range of beautiful reddish color tones, slowly drawn during millions of years via fossil-diagenetic processes. The complicated sedimentarian architecture of the layers where most large vertebrates are found makes the excavation methodology a real challenge. Sometimes the local miners have to excavate long tunnels that follow the distribution of the fossiliferous layer.
