Description
Extremely rare piece coming from the Cretaceous sites of the Kem Kem basin. It is a very compact and robust bone, with a strong curvature. Its morphology resembles that of the femur of a turtle. However, its taxonomical identification is not certain. This is a unique and extremely rare piece. It can the subject of new comparative studies with other already published rests.
Therefore, this specimen presents an additional scientific interest given the classification difficulty. Hence, it is very appropriate for subject matter experts.

It does not have any restoration or reparation. It has incredible fossilization colors, mixing whites with red and orange shades. The diaphysis is perfectly preserved. However, the distal epiphysis and a small part of the proximal epiphysis are missing

In these delta and fluvial ecosystems which constituted the paleogeography of the north of Africa 100 million years ago, multiple reptiles could be found, among which the turtles were one of them. However, the turtle rests in these sites are scarce and rare.

This piece has a complicated taxonomic assignation. Nevertheless, there are not many turtles described so far. Next we will list the ones which have been described until now:
- Dirqadim Gaffney et al.2006. Full reference: E. S. Gaffney, H. Tong, and P. A. Meylan. 2006. Evolution of the side-necked turtles: The families Bothremydidae, Euraxemydidae, and Araripemydidae. Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History 300:1-318
- Galianemys emringeri Gaffney et al. 2002. Full reference: E. S. Gaffney, H. Tong, and P. A. Meylan. 2002. Galianemys, a new side-necked turtle (Pelomedusoides: Bothremydidae) from the Late Cretaceous of Morocco. American Museum Novitates 3379:1-20
- Hamadachelys escuilliei Tong and Buffetaut 1996

The bone rests from the sites in the south of Morocco are very scarce and valuable because of many reasons. One of them is the very same nature of the geological formation that contains them. The sediments were formed in delta and fluvial environments, where the transportation energy was relatively high. Because of this, any possibility of finding articulated rests is very rare, since the rests of dead animals where transported and deteriorated. That is why only the most robust bones or the most stable parts are usually preserved. Another reason for the lack of complete dinosaur bones in this region is the destructive methodology normally employed by the local miners in their excavations, which in the search of teeth, usually destroy many interesting bone rests.

The Only Real Specialist. A Certified Paleontologist in Charge

Many turn their hobby into business, they have an online store or sell in eBay. While that can be commendable, it can’t compare with a real expert, with years of academic formation, supervised field work experience, trained in the art of correct identification, detection of fakes, and a solid network of other accredited paleontologists to consult with.

The key facts are being able to guarantee:
Proper Fossil IDAccurate Scientific DescriptionLifetime Warranty

We do that, and in addition we provide a state-of-the-art uniquely numbered, 24/7 online verifiable, hologram-secured Certificate of Authenticity with all the specimens. It is a lifetime warranty: if new discoveries are made that modify the classification of the specimen or there is any inaccuracy, we will re-issue the certificate.
