Description

Thescelosaurus fossils are found in the Lance Creek Formation (FM) in Wyoming, a Late Cretaceous rock layer famous for yielding remains of this small, burrowing herbivorous dinosaur alongside giants like T. rex, with the first specimens discovered there by John Bell Hatcher in 1891, leading to its name meaning "wondrous lizard".

These fossils, often with small bones and teeth, show adaptations for digging and a more solitary life, contrasting with typical herd dinosaurs.

Key Details about Thescelosaurus from Lance Creek:

Formation & Location: Lance Formation, Wyoming, USA (with similar deposits in Hell Creek Formation).

Age: Late Cretaceous Period (around 67 million years ago).

Discovery: First fossils found by John Bell Hatcher in 1891.

Meaning: "Wondrous lizard" (from Greek theskelos "wondrous, marvelous").

Diet & Size: Herbivore, about 2.5 to 4 meters (8-13 ft) long.

Unique Adaptations: Evidence suggests semi-burrowing behavior, with enhanced senses for underground life and a robust hip structure for digging.

Environment: Lived in the same floodplain/river system as Tyrannosaurus rex, using burrows for shelter, as explained scientifically in the next link: Microfossils of the Lance Formation, Including the Rare Dinosaur

This tooth does not have any type of restoration or repair. It is a magnificent acquisition for any collection. It shows a quite well developed feeding wear.
